Conservative lawmakers are looking at legislation to strip companies like Google, Facebook etc., of protections they claim as "telecommunications companies". If the phone companies started editing/changing, deleting information from users phone calls, that would invoke legal penalties and license revocations. So the social media companies need to make up their minds. Either they only carry information or they modify/alter information. They can't have it both ways.
