The Supreme Court has already ruled (multiple times) that police officers have no duty to protect individual citizens, only the public at large.
As disconcerting as it is, that is settled law.
But this is different. School resource officers are posted there PRECISELY to protect the occupants of those buildings. This man was a school resource officer posted at Marjorie Stoneman Douglass high school.
The defense will attempt to blur the line, and undoubtedly cite the aforementioned precedent.
But it doesn't, and can't, fly.
He wasn't out on patrol in the general population, duty-bound to protect only the public order. He was there for the specific duty he consciously failed to carry out.
This unfortunate affair should prove interesting.
