Nothing wakes a person up to Reality like the un-muffled sound of a firearm discharge at close range. A good reminder (briefly/occasionally) of what war sounds like up-close and personal. It sounds like death, annihilation, oblivion, cold indifference to morality - fast approaching and IN YOUR FACE.
People without courage cannot handle combat. War is not like Hell, (according to those I have spoken with who have experienced large-scale, sustained combat) it IS Hell.
Severian: It seemed the smart thing to do.
Sgt. Gausacht: (scoffing) I see a lot of smart men on the battlefield - I step over their bodies mostly.
Cue: Det. Callahan: A man's gotta know his limitations.
