I should think BOTH producers earned their paychecks, eh?
Phil Spector (the 1960s Wall of Sound), George Martin (the Fifth Beatle), Alan Parsons (Dark Side of the Moon), Eddie Offord (Yes, etc.) all are unknown outside of the Music Biz, which is the way they like it. Todd Rundgren is a good example of what you posted about producers being project-oriented. Rundgren never became a super-star (he never played the big venues or had platinum records) but he understood the SOUND of a superstar (he produced many million-selling records including every big hit Daryl Hall had). Tapping a mass-market with a platinum-record is like witnessing an eclipse - as quickly as it occurs, it has gone.
