The supreme concern aside from matters of oaths to God, for a great leader is maintaining power. Trump seemed to have that as a sort-of afterthought, not the main event. He was apparently either lured or walked eyes wide open into that mine field, which was a political blunder of great magnitude. It is one of the biggest misconceptions of literature/history that Machiavelli was a fascist. He was a strong proponent of authentic Republicanism (his greater work was not the Prince, it was an observation/analysis of the wonderfully advanced Roman Republic). Machiavelli was the supreme realist. If ever we needed a realist in politics on the conservative side, it is now.
