10lbs of ammunition (about the max you would want in any bugout situation):
105 shells of 12ga
350 rounds of 9mm or .223/5.56
1300 rounds of 22LR.
With good shot placement, 22LR wins.
My ready-kit includes an AR & 200 rounds, a 9mm & 50 rounds, and a 22LR revolver with 500 rounds. I can feed my family for years with deer, squirrel, rabbit, Turkey, etc... all easily harvestible with a 22LR. A lot of "preppers" just carry a 22LR conversion kit (just a bolt & magazine) to convert their AR from .223/5.56 to 22LR. For the space & weight of 200 rounds of the .223, you can have the conversation kit & 500 rounds of 22LR.
Personally, I would rather a backup pistol because I can't hand a conversation kit to someone for them to cover my six.
