I would guess that you and I have vocabularies that are extensive, by comparison. Probably in or near the 90th percentile for native speakers in our age range. I am a voracious reader, and have been all my life. That makes a big difference.
However, I still need a dictionary handy when reading Mychal. I knew guys like him in school, and just considered them to be showoffs.
I write for communication. I do not intentionally use uncommon words when a more common word suits my purpose and adequately conveys my thought. Mychal is not similarly afflicted.
