West Orange's Mark Kelly leads in Arizona U.S. Senate race, poll shows - New Jersey Globe

2-2 minutes

West Orange native Mark Kelly has a 50%-44% lead over GOP incumbent Martha McSally in the race for a U.S. Senate seat in Arizona, according to a Monmouth University poll released this morning.

Kelly was flew combat missions as a U.S. Navy pilot during the Gulf War and then became an astronaut on four space shuttle missions.  He became one of the nation’s leading gun safety advocates after his wife, Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Arizona) was shot in the head while meeting with constituents in 2011.

McSally, a former combat veteran and congresswoman, narrowly lost a 2018 Senate race, but was appointed to fill Arizona’ other Senate seat following the death of John McCain.

The Monmouth poll shows Joe Biden with a 51%-31% lead over Bernie Sanders in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.

In a hypothetical head-to-head in the general election, Biden leads President Donald Trump by a narrow 46%-43% margin.

“Impressions of the Democratic nominee will shift once the general election campaign gets under way, but Biden would start off by putting Arizona within reach,” said Patrick Murray, the director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

Kelly has favorables of 41%-17%, while McSally is upside-down at 35%-39%.

The Monmouth University Poll was conducted between March 11-14 with 847 Arizona registered voters and has a margin of error of +/- 5.1%.

Democrats wouldn't buy a clue if it was government subsidized.
