Odds are heavily against nominees running more than once being elected. I think only four out of 45 presidents were nominated for and ran for the office more than once and got elected.

Nixon is probably the most well-known - since Kennedy beat him in 1960, then after JFK got murdered,(and the nation had a belly full of Lyndon "Mad Bomber" Johnson's Vietnam War failures), Nixon ran again and won.
