The song he wrote for them, "Last Train to Clarksville," was friggin' brilliant. So were most of the songs he wrote for that faux pop-group. Goofy-acting Mickey Dolenz was no fool either. Dolenz had (has?) a terrific voice. Dolenz also had a professional-caliber singing voice and took most of the lead vocals especially on the best songs.
The Monkees experiment was an example of an "Edsel" project that actually resulted in a great car. Kudos to producer / co-creator Don Kirschner for casting the right people for the job.
