Michael Nesmith was wasted on the Monkees.

The song he wrote for them, "Last Train to Clarksville," was friggin' brilliant. So were most of the songs he wrote for that faux pop-group. Goofy-acting Mickey Dolenz was no fool either. Dolenz had (has?) a terrific voice. Dolenz also had a professional-caliber singing voice and took most of the lead vocals especially on the best songs.

The Monkees experiment was an example of an "Edsel" project that actually resulted in a great car. Kudos to producer / co-creator Don Kirschner for casting the right people for the job.
