A recent letter to the editor compared car accidents to mass shootings. Most people driving cars don’t purposely aim them at people in order to kill as many as possible. Is the person who wrote the letter trying to say that the shootings in Parkland, El Paso and Dayton were the result of somebody “accidentally” firing a gun and therefore killing a lot of people? This is like comparing apples to oranges.

I can see owning a weapon for self-defense. I can also see owning them to hunt. But why do you need a gun that can fire several rounds of ammunition just to take down a deer or rabbit? The only purpose for this type weapon is to kill as many people in a short period of time.

These type weapons should be in the hands of our police and military to protect us. They do not need to be in the hands of deranged people to kill at will.

Yes, something needs to be done to prevent these type killings. Comparing car accidents to mass shootings is ludicrous. The Republicans and Democrats have got to stop making this a political issue and get together and solve the problem.

Virginia Miller, Mulberry

Ms. Miller is obviously ignorant about firearms, and bases her opinions on that ignorance. It is a typical emotional response untethered from facts and reality. I understand her sincerity, but that doesn't compensate for her misguided perception, and it doesn't mitigate her probable propensity to vote for politicians whose respect for constitutional restrictions on government power is, well, lacking.

Our fundamental rights are unalienable, which means that their efficacy is above and beyond debate. That precept is at the foundation of our free republic, and with voters possessed of Ms. Miller's ignorance, that liberty is at risk.

Democrats wouldn't buy a clue if it was government subsidized.
