Geese eat mostly algae, muck, plants and such - so whenever there is a LOT of that around, the population can skyrocket.
Since most animals in the wild die horribly (forgive me) from either starvation or disease, shooting them in most cases spares them a much slower, more unpleasant death.
That is the ugly reality of the brutality of nature.
