In a nutshell, the disease may be getting a little less idiopathic.
They never had a tangible biochemical link between the presence of the plaque in the brain and the degeneration of neurons.

Interesting side note - for those who are troubled by genetic engineering (I among them) it is only through the use of genetically altered mice ("custom made" to have nervous systems more like human beings) that this link has been revealed empirically.

if it holds, there may actually be serious discussion of a defacto "cure" because if the disease's destructive phase may be stopped, having the plaque on neurons may be as harmless as gray hair or baldness.
