The writers prolly picked up early on how strong Marvin became in John's portrayal, and gave him a lot more lines than his character probably had at first.

JM played Marvin like an articulate (but equally disoriented) Ozzy Ozborn

Marvin: He made the run to emotional safety!! 

I still have no idea what he was talking about but I laughed at the way he said it - totally unexpected (since Marvin usually talked about outer-orbit, extroverted LSD-burned  lunacy). 

Author Gene Wolfe has characters like that occasionally in his novels. People who just say stupid, meaningless, overly-vague things. They are generally portrayed as dull, servile, shallow or malevolent people.
