Read some explanations of what this means - supposedly signal magnitude and clarity (aka loud and clear) which did not seem satisfactory since it was a Space Marine drop-ship pilot in Aliens (Alien2) who says it (referring to nominal trajectory for landing).
I just assumed that it was a reference to an elementary target grid of five lines on each plane with a cross in the middle IOW directly on target (at the center of the cross-hairs) and of course being in the pipe figurative for being in the center of a scope (imagine a circle in the center of the grid below as "the pipe").
Anyone know this phrases origin?
