The term "yellow journalism" refers to the color of the paper used to print with - the idea being that a reputable newspaper uses paper that is whiter (more costly), while less-reputable newspapers buy inferior (cheaper) yellowish paper to print upon. That's not likely the case anymore but the slang pejorative term stuck. Smarter people want objective, concise, reliable information in their news, bored people who are not deep thinkers prefer sensationalism because they seek to be entertained/distracted/jerked off (forgive me) not informed.
