Sigmund Freud believed it possible (likely) that technology-dominated society would end in catastrophe for the human race. He questioned the whole idea of "progress" as the be-all, end-all for civilization. 

I don't view the world as "society" in the sense that societies aren't big living things, they are just groups of individuals. So for me, when a question like yours is asked, I am inclined to rephrase it as, "are video games destroying people"? The answer to that is yes as long as you add the term "helping destroy". People are not easily destroyed; it takes a combination of factors.
