That culture seems to have a large component of people who engage in disciplined introspection - a pragmatic examination of how they can optimize themselves and their world in cost-effective* ways. Hey, if someone can afford it, why not? heh * Cost-effective in terms of resources both material (financial) and emotional/spiritual.
