Why Walter Cronkite Changed Mind and Became a Conservative

By The ASSORTED PRESS

Aug 5, 2004 (TAP) -- In a surprise move that shocked his closest friends and colleagues Walter Cronkite, veteran liberal TV journalist explained today why he changed his mind and became a Conservative who will be voting for President Bush.

Mr. Cronkite who now writes a column, called "And that's the way I see it...", offers two reasons for his switch from the Left to the Right side of the political spectrum.

1) "When I came up through the ranks of journalism," says Mr. Cronkite, "I observed the harsh inequalities created by the federal government's various dependency programs which result in de facto segregation, creating a permanent underclass in American society.

Since I realized that liberal government social engineering fosters these inequalities, I have decided now to lean toward the conservative values of self-reliance, strong families, and communities where neighbors help neighbors rather than rely on remote bureaucrats." Mr. Cronkite added, "It's the American way."

2) Mr. Cronkite mentioned his second reason,
"I want to side with the powerless rather than the powerful, because I have seen how powerful politicians and government agencies can rob one group of people of their money then use it to strip other citizens of their dignity while ostensibly trying to 'help' them."

"As a journalist, my heart bleeds for the oppressed," wrote Mr. Cronkite, "and that's why I'm a conservative. There...I've said it...and I'm unashamed, President George W. Bush will be getting my vote in November."

Assorted Press calls to, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw requesting comment on Mr. Cronkite's decision were not returned.
