Nader Sues to Get Ballot Access in Texas

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

AUSTIN, Texas July 22, 2004 (AP) -- Ralph Nader's independent campaign for president is still fighting to get him on the Texas ballot for the November general election.

A federal lawsuit filed by the consumer activist says Texas ballot access laws for independent candidates are unconstitutional. It was set for a hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Lee Yeakel on Thursday.........

........The Nader campaign has accused Democrats of trying to keep him off the ballot in several states this year, fearing he will draw voters away from presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry.

Mike Lavigne, spokesman for the Texas Democratic Party, said Texas Democrats have not conducted any coordinated effort against Nader.

``We'd prefer not to have him on the ballot,'' Lavigne said. ``A vote for Nader is a vote for Bush.''

GOP Offers to Fund Ralph Nader's Presidential Bid

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader , shown here July 9, could steal votes away from the Democrats in the November 2 election and reelect President George W. Bush by default, Terry McAuliffe, chairman of the Democratic Party said.

July 22, 2004 (TAP) -- The Republican National Committee (RNC) today offered to fully fund Ralph Nader's independent run for the White House. Meanwhile Mr. Nader said he's headed back to Texas to pursue his federal lawsuit to get on the Texas ballot

"We're quite enthusiastic about his candidacy," said RNC spokesman Barry D. Hatchett.  "We want Americans to hear his left-wing vision for our nation, and to find out everything they can about his background.

We're going to commit millions to making sure that happens. And we're not doing this because he may take votes from John Kerry. It's simple altruism...call it a form compassionate conservatism."
