Julian Bond Says Republican Ads Disenfranchise NAACP Voters

By Sid E. Slicker, TAP political reporter

February 3, 2006 (TAP) — NAACP Chairman Julian Bond recently compared the Republican Party to Nazi's when he said, "The Republican Party should have the American flag and the swastika flying side by side".

Today Mr. Bond said, "The Republican Party's 2006 Congressional campaign has launched ads which give NAACP members incorrect instructions that could result in thousands of disenfranchised African-American voters in November".

Bond's statement said that because of the GOP ads, vast numbers of African-American voters in America will be disenfranchised in 2006 because they will fail to vote, or they will spoil their ballots.

The Assorted Press has obtained the following copy of the GOP ad due to run on TV and radio stations which target black listeners.

“Julian Bond says you need to register to vote and show up at the polls on November 10th. But do you really want to take orders from this man – a spoiled rich, black from Atlanta? The truth is: November 3rd is a long time away. Relax. Don't let a pampered prep-school millionaire push you around.

Then, if you really want to vote, just show up at any public building on November 5th. What right does this person have to tell you where to vote? Once you get in the voting booth, don’t waste half your day poking at a piece of paper just because a guy who rides a $100,000 Mercedes tells you to.

It’s your ballot, so just hurry through it, lightly punching numerous holes to create interesting patterns. Don’t worry – local election officials can figure out who you meant to vote for. After all, they're your public servants.

So, don’t let Julian Bond take away your civil right to stay home on November 4th. And don’t let anyone force you to follow ballot instructions written by white government people. On November 6th, be creative, be empowered, be free."
